The Great Felini draws its visual inspiration from the wonderfully theatrical world of the vintage circus—a place of striped big tops, painted stars, elaborate costumes, daring performers, and extravagant showmanship. Stars and stripes became recognizable motifs within traditional circus aesthetics, helping create the spectacle and visual identity associated with the circus.
Here, muted burgundy-and-cream stripes form the backdrop of Felini's miniature stage, while the star-covered circus pedestal and wooden floor evoke an old traveling carnival or faded European sideshow.
Rather than placing the artwork in a conventional frame, Tracy chose an ornate bronze-toned frame that becomes part of the story itself. Its elaborate architectural details transform the frame into a proscenium—the opening of a tiny theater where Felini's performance appears to be taking place.
The result feels less like a picture hanging on the wall and more like discovering a miniature circus tucked inside an antique frame.
The Great Felini is an original artwork by Tracy Updike created using a dimensional paper-relief technique that transforms her illustration into a sculptural piece.
Tracy begins with her original digital illustration, then separates the artwork into individual visual elements. Those elements are die-cut, layered, and carefully assembled at different depths, allowing Felini, his costume, circus pedestal, stage, and backdrop to physically project forward from one another.
Viewed from different angles, the shadows between those layers shift subtly, giving the piece a sense of depth and movement that a traditional flat print cannot replicate.
The finished paper relief is protected behind glass within its ornate frame.
